I get Paid in Travel Days!

hard work that pays off ... and travel long once I travel!

I do not have a dream job. Instead, I DO dream while I job. Mainly I play with numbers. I often calculate how many days I can stay in diverse countries with the money I`ve just earned. These thoughts comfort me greatly whenever I have a small “what for” crisis! Let`s go through a working day and play a bit with possible travel destinations and travel days respectively. Every evening when I leave the firm, it feels like I`ve just got paid in travel days! Quite a hard currency!

The Zero-Sum Period!

time to clock in

Time to Clock In!

I clock in at around 07.15 a.m. I get paid per hour a crazily high amount of money which is exactly 23.2431034482758621 CHF net. My daily living expenses in Switzerland add up to around 46.66 CHF. Since I don`t work on weekends, I need to earn 70 CHF per working day to cover all days of the week. So I start the in the morning with a negative balance.

Producing stuff!

While I package one of the bestseller products of the company, I imagine how I pack my backpack and figure out what I possibly need for this kind of region and for that kind of trip and for that part of the world.

A small Mid-Morning Snack

A small Mid-Morning Snack

9 a.m. – Mid-morning break! I usually eat a Vanille Plunder and drink a black coffee. And I am wondering where all the amazing ingredients come from that give me such a taste explosion in my mouth? South America, Asia, Africa?

Time to Earn Travel Days

Me, doing a dangerous job!

Me, doing a dangerous job!

At 10.16 a.m. I have fulfilled my duty as citizen of Switzerland and my living expenses are covered! Time to earn money for what really matters: Travel Days! PS: The starting material for this particular product I help to produce here (on the picture) originates from Malaysia. Malaysia, Malaysia, you make me go crazier!

One hour later I sit on a forklift and I imagine driving a three wheeler as I`ve done it just months ago on the roads of Eastern Sri Lanka. As you can see in the diagram below, I already earned over a whole day in India and almost one day in Panama! To calculate my gained travel days, I additionally need an approximate value of my daily travel expenses in a particular place. In this article I rely on the prices (for 2013) proposed by Price of Travel which I consider as reasonable to my experience.

At noon it`s Pizza time! Almost every day I eat pizza. It`s cheap, made quickly and serves its purpose: Hunger, satisfied! Anyway, I always dream of Malai Kofta, Kottu Roti or Enchiladas! And hey, I have already earned one day in South Africa or half a day in Holland!

Lunch Break! Pizza Time! Already two and a half days in India in my vest pocket!

While I am shrink wrapping some carton boxes, I listen to a radio programm that communicates the latest news from the region. Interesting! Not! I don`t care if an accident has caused ten kilometers of traffic jam, a cat has been saved from a tree or a new local parliamentarian has voted for a new bridge over the village stream! There must be more adventure out there than this! Check out now how fast my travel days account takes off!

I push the green button, then the black, then the red, then … whatever! While I am filling a yet liquid product into my carton boxes that follow a well-aligned pattern on the scales, I dream of the bustling, chaotic places I have visited in India; four days in Delhi are within reach.

Me working at a semiautomatic filling system! More and more travel days ...

Me working at a semiautomatic filling system! More and more travel days …

At three o`clock I drink another coffee and enjoy the last sunbeams of the day. The sun is setting soon. Not in Panama City or in Montevideo! I could stay there for more than three days by now. How wonderful, I think and get up for the last bit of work.

Mid-afternoon; a short break in the setting sun! I can hear the waves of the sea ...

I bring all assigned jobs for the day to an end, empty all trash containers and close up the stockrooms. Time for a nice shower! The water is pouring down on me. I imagine being underneath Tiu Kelep, a waterfall in Lombok, Indonesia. The sound of the water is ear-deafening and its force when it hits the basin below or my naked skin is enormous. Are there waterfalls in South Africa? I could go there for three days with the money I earned by now!

I close the stockrooms and go have a shower.

My working day is over! I clock out and leave with a friendly goodbye to my coworkers. Today I have earned 7.2 days in Delhi, 4.9 days in Panama City, 4.2 days in Montevideo, 3.5 days in Cape Town, 2.4 days in New Orleans and 1.6 days in Amsterdam!

Time to clock out! Time to go home! Time to make plans for the next trip ...

Time to clock out! Time to go home! Time to make plans for the next trip …

These kinds of daydreams help me a lot to endure my out of travel time! By the end of a working week I could already travel for more than twenty days in Central- and South America or for more than two weeks in South Africa! And by the end of a working month I could go on a trip through India for almost 5 months, or through Europe for more than one month! For the necessary flights and visas I have to work some more days of course, though that would be a topic of its own!

If you get the impression that I am crazy about traveling … then yes, you are right!

So what about you? Do you also get paid in travel days? How many travel days have you earned by the end of a working day? Feel free to leave a comment below!

    Sick Boy…
How long could you travel in the swiss alps? ah yeah… after one month of work you could stay for a weekend 🙁

    • Maybe a little bit more! I read yesterday that a standard day with hotel, lift pass, food and a beer costs about 315 Euros per day (in the fifth cheapest Swiss ski region)! I think that there are cheaper options than that, but still … it will be a huge trade-off (spending your holidays in Switzerland)!

    Hey Patric

You are so right!!! And thank you, it made me smile – I should also calculate like this. Instead I am doing a small count down on “how many days do I need to go to work till I am free as a birth”: its 21.7 days and trust me, after the lunch break there will only be 21.4 days left… 😉

I hope you enjoy your travel and all the nice places around the world.

    Ciao

    Birgit

    • Heyho Birgit,
I am honored to have made you smile a bit! I enyoy my traveling time, even though I am somewhat stuck in Istanbul! Waiting for the Iran-Visa that hasn`t arrived yet! Well, that`s part of the deal of spontaneous traveling 🙂
Hope to hear of your stories!
